The 1st graders traced leaf stencils and drew spirals to make leaves blowing in the wind. It was their first time using watercolors this year and they did great!

The 8th graders rubbed leaves to create leaf-texture. They completed two different designs that were put together to make a diptych (two works of art that are meant to be next to each other). Using what they learned about negative and positive space, they colored the negative space in darker. They were very creative with their use of colors!

The 5th and 7th graders practiced overlapping with leaf stencils. They also used colored pencils to mix colors and create multi-colored leaves like the ones we see outside in the fall.

Day of Dead Dance

Day of the Dead,November 2nd, is a popular celebration in Mexico. Families and friends gather together to remember loved ones who have passed away. The celebrations are upbeat and colorful because they are in remembrance of the happy and funny times shared between the deceased.


The 3rd grade decorated skeleton bones and the 5th graders made the paper flowers for the hats, and together it made our dancing Day of the Dead creation. The 3rd graders did a great job of using all the different lines we learned about earlier in the year to make interesting designs. Flowers and swirly lines are the two most common Day of the Dead skeleton designs.

Max and the Wild Things come to Fernwood

The Lower Grades read the book "Where the Wild Things Are" in celebration of the movie coming out in theaters. They made a collage of their own Wild Thing. They learned how to draw stripes and feathers, and their Wild Things rolled their terrible yellow eyes, showed their terrible claws, and mashed their terrible teeth. I dressed up as Max on Halloween...I make a great Max, don't I! I learned my mischievous smile from my students :-)

Meet Matisse

Art Club practiced mixing their primary colors and made a color wheel. Using the six colors from their color wheel, they did their own version of Matisse's Madame, also called the "Green Line".

The eighth grade is also studying Matisse, but they studied his famous cutouts. They used primary colors, figures, and again positive/negative space!

Positive/Negative Space, but only Positive People

8th graders studied negative and positive space by cutting out of the black paper and used the scraps as positive space for the negative image. NO SCRAPS on floor! If they have scraps, that means they did it wrong. A special thank you to Bobby who worked extra hard past few class periods. He did the bike one below.

Get to Know Van Gogh

The Art Club studied the detailed sky from Van Gogh's "Starry Night". Their projects are swirly like his! I love their interpretations of Van Gogh's sky!

Everyone has remembered Vincent Van Gogh's name...to help, we think "not car, but VAN...not stop, but GO! :-) With both projects they used glitter glue to make the texture that is one of Van Gogh's trademarks.

Not So Scary Scarecrows

The second graders made scarecrows using geometric shapes. As always the students put their own style into the same basic instructions. I had a few buttons, but only enough for one per student. The next day I found 2 huge jars of buttons, of course! Next year we will use the buttons, hay, clothe, and make scarecrows version2.0 :-)
