Fernwood meets Harold

After reading the book "Harold and the Purple Crayon", K and 1st graders put their own purple crayon into action. Some of the students had already met Harold from the HBO family series about Harold and his crayon. Laurel Burch's Fantastic Felines

This past month, Fernwood enjoyed spring's floral with Laurel-pa-looza! Each class did a different Laurel Burch project. She is one of my favorite artists because of her bold colors and fanciful subject matter. She started by selling artwork on the street and now her artwork designs have been turned into journals, fabric, clothing, and more more!! What mood are you in today?

After reading "Glad Monster, Sad Monster" the K-2nd graders made their own mood monsters. You should be able to tell how their mood monsters are feeling depending on its color. When you see a blue painting does it make you more sad than a painting with bright yellow colors? When Pablo Picasso was really sad he painting only with blue colors! When Miss Reardon gets mad does her face turn red ?! ;-) Colors can show different moods.

Chinese New Year

The Chinese New Year is on Feb. 14th this year and it is the year of the tiger. There is a free parade in Chinatown, try to make it! The lower grades watched videos of the lion and the dragon dance, but nothing compares to seeing it live. We also made red lanterns similar to the ones that grace the streets of China, Japan, Korean, and many other Asian countries during the Chinese New Year.

We Hope the Groundhog is Wrong!

On Feb.2, Groundhog's Day, the Kindergarten and First Graders watched CNN News of the Groundhog, "Phil", coming out of his hole and seeing his shadow. This means that they predict six more weeks of winter. We hope he is wrong, but just in case, we bundled up our groundhogs with scarves and hats.

The K-2nd grade designed blankets inspired by Kandinsky and Mondrian. We bundled up our penguins and bears for the winter.

K-4th Grade Study Art History

Kindergarten through 4th grade studied Art History this week in art class. Some people do not learn about these paintings until college! Ask us about the paintings below and we can impress you with our college-level knowledge. We watched Disney Channel's "Wizards of Waverly Place" when Alex brings these paintings to life to help her with her Art History homework. Here are some things we learned:

"Mona Lisa" is painted by Leonardo da Vinci. She is the most well known painting in the whole world. Many people argue about whether or not she is smiling, what do you think? Her eyes always seem to be looking at you...it is like they are following you! She lived centuries ago and was from Italy.
"The Scream" was painting by Munch (Moon-k). In Wizards of Waverly Place, the man is screaming because his shoes are too small, that is so silly! Why do you think he is screaming?
Vincent Van Gogh is famous for his sunflowers (we drew those earlier this year). He went crazy later in his life and cut his ear off :-O That is why he painted himself with a bandage around his head.
This painting of a Dutch boy in a blue costume is called "Blue Boy"- this one is so easy to remember! Congratulations on the facts are learned in this week's Art History lesson.

2010! New Year, New Beginnings :-)

Happy 2010!! New Year Day is my second favorite holiday (after Halloween:-)) because everyone makes resolutions and is so hopeful to work hard in order to grow and better themselves. My New Year's resolution is going to be better with requiring the respect I deserve, so beware ;-) :-) What will your New Year resolution be?

The first graders made party hats to wear on New Years Eve. They earned the right to do papier mache! They got there hands (and the tables) nice and goooooey with flour paste (1 cup flour, 1 cup water, 1 teaspoon salt). First they used newspaper to cover the cone and then they decorated with tissue paper, glitter and sequins.


After break everyone starts with pencils again. I hope that all the classes can earn the right to use papier mache by the end of the school year. Work hard and quiet so that we can do extra cool stuff.

Make sure you remember to wear your party hats, tiaras, dress up and make noise at midnight! And decide what your resolution will be!

Cookie Cutter Clay Ornaments

The lower graders got their hands messy making their clay ornaments. They mixed 2 cups of flour, with one cup salt and one cup water, and ta-da, they made clay. You probably have the ingredients in your cupboard right now.
It is easy! After you make the clay, pat it down flat and use a cookie cutter to make the shape. Use a straw to point a hole at the top. Set aside to dry for a week.

Artwork by Akilah and Janeia (Art Club students also made clay- Akilah used a fork on her gingerbread man and Janeia decided not to use the cookie cutters and sculpted the thumbs up, reindeer and that little bow!)
Makayla made great texture on her ornaments! (texture= look and feel of the fork markings)

Next paint and add fun stuff.

Set aside to dry for a day.
