2012 Art Show

It is always hard to choose which art to display because I love it all.  This year I put up over 500 works of art because I was given the time to do it!

Some of the projects I never got a chance to post on the blog, like the Zentangle by Ellusion and the Jamaican dancer by Shocquell below.

Walls leading up to the auditorium also had some artwork, there was lots to go around!

Ms. Appiah's Class Penguins!

On the way to 3rd floor to Ndebele, you will pass our Penguins from Antartica. Ms. Appiah's class had made the penguin eggs out of paper mache.  The baby penguins are stuffed animals.  The giant penguins are made with bulletin board paper and our iceberg is boxes and bulletin board paper.

We turned the 3rd floor into an Ndebele village. We finally got around to finishing and hanging our Ndebele houses. It was a school-side project we did in beginning of year. 6th graders did black outline, 3-5th grade painted them in, and 7th and 8th graders touched them up. School-wide projects can be tricky because many students don't want people painting over their work, but it is good practice of teamwork. The 7th graders had done their own miniature house design and K and 1st graders did Ndebele chickens displayed above the houses.

Miro's Motifs

7th graders studied the Spanish Surrealist Artist Joan Miro. Miro's "Chicago" is a large sculpture found downtown across from the Daley Center.

They looked at Miro's Constellation Series and found some of his motifs (a distinctive feature that is repeated in an artist's work).


We discussed surreal and abstract art (abstract art=from your imagination; surreal art= using your subconscious). They began their piece by closing their eyes and making three "squiggles". Next they added some of his motifs. They used pastels, crayons, and markers for the color.

Students were encouraged to use their imagination and find things amongst their squiggles. Cartez was very good at this and found a dragon/monster type creature. He went around the room helping other students find things.

Miss Reardon believes that these are great Leaves!

The 1st graders traced leaf stencils and drew spirals to make leaves blowing in the wind. It was their first time using watercolors this year and they did great!

The 8th graders rubbed leaves to create leaf-texture. They completed two different designs that were put together to make a diptych (two works of art that are meant to be next to each other). Using what they learned about negative and positive space, they colored the negative space in darker. They were very creative with their use of colors!

The 5th and 7th graders practiced overlapping with leaf stencils. They also used colored pencils to mix colors and create multi-colored leaves like the ones we see outside in the fall.
