Moonlight Mixing

8th graders began with a white moon and practiced mixing different tints by adding a tiny bit of either blue or red to their white paint. For each ring they added more color to the white, making it darker and darker.
Their trees were made by gluing strips of ripped black or white paper. I asked them to make sure the thicker end to meet the trunk of the tree and get gradually smaller scraps of paper for branches.

3rd and 4th graders practiced their observation and creativity skills with their fun nutcrackers. I have each table a couple of nutcrackers to look at, but they were encouraged to add their add details. Therefore, we had quite a variety of nutcrackers.

Color Explosion

8th graders studied colors while re-making Madame Matisse. They loved about Matisse and his love of color. The 6th graders created still lives inspired by Matisse. I will post them soon.

Fish Finally Installed!

Special thank you to my dad who visited Fernwood and finally installed the mosaic in the office. I am in the process of making a poster to acknowledge the artists who worked so hard on the mosaic last year. I will have a diagram labeling whose did each fish, sea creature, the gluing, grouting, etc. Although the fish do have some initials carved in them, I might need your help in refreshing my memory! I hope everyone is enjoying the new addition to the main office.

Fall Upcycling

I am trying to do a lot of "Upcycling" this year. It is like recycling except instead of reusing the material, you give the material a second life. You make something more wonderful out of the used materials. We decorated the falls with our magnificently large maple leaves made out of old grocery bags.

Wow! How quickly time can pass! Especially when you are busy running around :) I do not even know where to begin because it has been so long since I uploaded pictures of everyone's artwork. My apologizes. I have a stack of student work at school to upload too. Thanks for all your patience! Figured I'd begin with our fun Wild Thing masks we made last month! K-1st graders read "Where the Wild Things Are" and created their own wild thing. I am sure some of you were chased around by one of these at home.

1st and 2nd graders' Magic Carpets

1st and 2nd graders practiced drawing wavy, zig-zag and broken lines while dreaming up places they would fly on their magic carpets. They also learned out of double knot and earned beads whenever they got it right! Many students did not want to go far on their magic carpets. Six Flags, Chuckie Cheese, and the movies were all popular destinations.

(see previous post for more info on warm/cool colors). Many students also choose to give their sun shades. That is why I called them "cool suns". It is very appropriate because when we started the project, it felt like 100 degrees out. A couple weeks later when we finished, the weather had quickly cooled to the 60s. It was a very sudden summer to fall this year!

Below is a photo of me as a chubby baby with my dad, one with warmer colors and one with cooler colors. Which one looks like its a more warm day? Which one looks like a cooler day? Warm colors (reds, oranges, yellows) make things appear more warm! Cool colors (blues, greens, purples) make things appear cooler. Can you see the difference?

Miro's Motifs

7th graders studied the Spanish Surrealist Artist Joan Miro. Miro's "Chicago" is a large sculpture found downtown across from the Daley Center.

They looked at Miro's Constellation Series and found some of his motifs (a distinctive feature that is repeated in an artist's work).

We discussed surreal and abstract art (abstract art=from your imagination; surreal art= using your subconscious). They began their piece by closing their eyes and making three "squiggles". Next they added some of his motifs. They used pastels, crayons, and markers for the color.

Students were encouraged to use their imagination and find things amongst their squiggles. Cartez was very good at this and found a dragon/monster type creature. He went around the room helping other students find things.

Our Great Waves

6th graders have been studying different types of wavy and curved lines. Also with it being hurricane season, we re-created "The Great Wave", one of the most recognizable works of art from Japan. They also recently practiced drawing trees using spiral lines, so some students chose to have trees growing in their water. As always I was impressed with the variety of styles.

We are back in school! Our first project was decorating the cover to our sketchbook. This year's group colors are orange, purple and green. Every class had the same guidelines of wavy line in middle, box on the wavy line, sun by their name as well of a zig-zag line, spirals and other shapes. Steps of the Mosaic

Making a mosaic has many many steps. If you look at my previous post, you will see that we worked with clay to make mosaic fish and sea creatures, but that is only the beginning. To make the mosaic, first the 3rd and 4th graders glued down their ceramic piece. Then the other grades helped by placing down tiles around the fish. We put brown and black tiles on the ocean floor and blue and green tiles in the sea.
None of the tiles in the picture below are glued down yet. We were still moving things around to decide how we wanted it.
Now we started gluing! Wear gloves while working with liquid nails. I had liquid nails stuck on my hands for a few days.
Kiara was smart and wore gloves.
After everything was glued (which took A LONG time) we put grout in between all the tiles. The mosaic is FOUR PANELS large!! I hope it will be installed this summer.
Ms. Elleby painted the fish on the panel you see below.

REAL CLAY!!

Since, we do not have a kiln (oven that cooks the clay) at our school, we have not had the pleasure of working with real ceramic clay until this spring. ArtReach, a program with Lill Street, came to show us how to make art with clay. They fired the clay in their kiln at their very large studio on the north-side Ravenswood neighborhood.

3rd and 4th graders were rewarded with this lesson because of their excellent behavior. First they designed their fish/sea creature on paper. Next they learned how to work with the clay, and finally they made their clay sea creature!

Egg Carton Flowers

2nd grade and Art Club made this interesting flowers using egg cartons, pipe cleaners and tissue paper. Although some students did an awesome job, many of them did not look very "flower-like" A lesson to improve on! The flowers needed more support. Next time I will probably paper mache over the egg carton.

Pastel Sand Dollars

The 4th and 5th graders practiced using pastels while making their Sand Dollar Designs. Some students had never heard of Sand Dollars, so first we "Google Imaged" Sand Dollars. I told them about how they are in the same family with star fish. Can you see why that might be so?

Silly Hats

Kindergarten was learning about all the different ways to manipulate paper while working on their "silly hat." They made spirals, used crazy scissors, hole punchers, crimped, you name it. Next they glued their paper on the hat. I told them to twist and turn the strips of paper like a roller coaster. Some students even glued on the play money they earned for prize day.

Side Projects

Iyana made this paper mache flying pig using balloon, tissue paper, and a pink pipe cleaner tail. It all got started when I had the brilliant idea to make paper mache cupcake piggy banks. The students went to see "Pinkilicious" the play, so I thought they'd like that. We used paper mache for the shape of cupcake and spackle for icing. It was not such a brilliant idea. A lot of work, a big mess, and they did not turn out well. Most of them are still unfinished. Whoops! I was better off making Flying Pigs like Iyana!!

The 3rd floor girls LOVE using craft string. Here are a few pens that the girls designed.

Luau

To celebrate Dr. Heath's retirement, Fernwood had a big Luau in June. It featured music, BBQ, Clowns who made balloons, a tattoo station, four or five blow-up games, and a trampoline. Here are some pictures taken at the Photo Prop Station. They are too funny.

Busy Busy Bees!!

I have not posted any artwork in a while. This is what I have been busy doing.
ART CLUB!! Thanks to my art club helpers who came Mon-Thurs (sometimes even Fridays, they couldn't get enough art club ;-)) to help out with the art room and work on their art projects.
Art Star Celebrities taking pictures on the Red Carpet at Fernwood's HipHop Award Ceremony. I blurred faces because some students have not turned in photo permission forms.
Mosaic Part One: Gluing all the pieces down, and getting hands dirty with Liquid Nails. For future reference, wear gloves while using liquid nails. But if you are like me and get liquid nails stuck on your hands, use nail polish remover to get it off. I discovered that after a couple days of dirty looking hands.

Mosaic Part Two: Grouting! Very fun to feel the mushhhhy grout. But if you are concerned about your carpet, you might want to lay down a blanket! Whoops.

I graded all your sketchbooks this week and I am very impressed with the improvement since August. Most of you are remembering the date, not skipping pages, and drawing all the steps. Lots of you earned an A for your Quick Draws!! I just found a website called DragoArt.com that can teach you have to draw just about anything. It shows it step-by-step just like you do in your sketchbook at school. Many of them are really advanced, but a challenge is always fun! Kenya did a Drug-Free Poster. There are awesome details, so make sure you click for a close-up view!
Kenmari earned a sketchbook last month for having the most stars in his class. I loved what he put on the cover "To only express my feelings." I also loved his awesome drawings he did inside. He is great with shading and those 3-d stars, wow! Awesome work Kenmari.

Kayla and Kori did these painting for a free paint. They turned out real fun.

Drawing is Easy as ABC (3rd and 4th Grade)

The 2nd-4th graders turned their favorite Quick Draw into a painting. Their Quick Draws for past 2 months have been turning letters into drawings. Try to find the letter they used in the paintings below.

Kayla H did the letter "F". She painted both sides of the paper, front side and back side of the girl! I will have to hang it on a string so that both sides can be seen.

Amari used the letter "K"

Timothy used the letter "U"
Derrick used the letter "O"
Shaionta used the letter "B"

Marquis used the letter "E"Kayla W used the letter "K"

Look Out for Stamping

I am still really into my "Zentangles" (I still need to get all of you to love it as much as I do!)but my latest passion is stamping. I splurged on ink pads, so there will be much more stamping to come. I discovered an easy way to make stamps. By putting those foam stickers on a little piece of cardboard (letters do not work well unless you glue them instead of use sticky side), you can make cheapest stamps ever!! These are some creations that 8th graders did in a short class period. The only requirement I gave them was to have a border and something bigger in middle. I can't wait to see all the ways the students think to use the stamps. I learn as much from all of you, as you learn from me!

What is your Grade? Extra Credit options

Progress Reports just went out and many students were wondering about their grades. 50% of your grade is your participation (stars/checks) and 50% is your Quick Draws and projects. It is March and some of you are still not getting 10s on your Quick Draws. At this point in the school year, there really aren't any excuses. I give credit for trying, so if you write the date and attempt all four steps you will get a ten! When I was grading them, I took a picture of someone's koi fish because I was impressed with how well they did it. Now I forget whose it was! If this is yours, find me and I will give you a treat for reading this :-)
Also, if you think you are doing poorly on Quick Draws and Participation, you can always do a drawing at home for Xtra Credit. Lorenzo in 3rd grade is always handing in cool drawings he did at home. This is his Sea Monster.
Deshun always does AWESOME Quick Draws (see dragon below), but he does not show the steps so I can not give him full credit :-( Please at least do quick sketch of first three steps. It is good practice.
However, Deshun does do Xtra Credit for me. We started studying warm and cool colors, so he drew out Warm and Cool coloring sheets for the students to practice with. Everyone loved how they looked and it does look very professional! Ashton painted this one in.
If you think you can not draw, you can also hand in a coloring sheet for Xtra credit. Deandre from 6th grade colored in these Astrology coloring sheets and I was impressed with how neat he used the markers. I also loved his choices of color.

Also if you finish early, you can always to Free Draw in your sketchbook and I will give Xtra Credit for that. I believe the heart below is by Tyeesha. This is why it is really important to write your name below your artwork...to help me!
Joseph from 2nd grade always does this really interesting superheroes when he finishes early. They are already so advanced that I can not wait to see how his drawings develop when he is older.

I want you to impress me too. Do more Free Draws when you finish early!

8th grade recycles scratch paper

I had leftover scratch paper (some of it good, some bad, depending on how hard the student had pressed with the oil pastels). I hate throwing away anything so instead of tossing it, I had 8th graders try to work with it. To my surprise they did not get annoyed and frustrated with finding a paper that worked well. They were really good sports about it, and some turned out really cool.

Patterned USA

Students practiced creating patterns with an empty map of the USA (split into 4 pieces). They were challenged to have their pattern relate to something about the state. I gave them a list of top commodities from each state to help inspire them.

Our Snowy Day

After experiencing our own very snowy day (Chicago's Blizzard of 2011!), the Kindergardeners- 2nd graders made artwork inspired by Ezra Jack Keat's "The Snowy Day". I supplied them with the cut-out of Peter in 3 different poses. They painted the snow and used snowflake stamps.

Lot of Love

Do you recognize this sculpture. It is designed by Robert Indiana and has been become iconic with multiple versions in a variety of colors and formats. We did our design on scratch paper.

In celebration of Valentine's Day, Google also celebrated Robert Indiana's sculpture as there opening search page.

Scratch Art Heart

After overcoming many obstacles we finished our scratch art. For anyone planning on doing this, I saw a tip online to add dish soap to black paint to avoid the chipping. The chipping was frustrating for many students, but regardless there were many successes.

Sketching Highlights

Fajah's zentangle is worth clicking on for a close-up. There are some really cool details she included. Do you spy a bird, a few people and more? Zentangles are fun because they are no mistakes.
Ellusion's dragon quick draw is impressive!

And Derrick's only in 3rd grade!
Lorenzo, also in 3rd grade, is always doing cool drawings like this volcano.
Lydell's sketch is real interesting.

Picture Perfect Penguins

After watching a movie about Cinderella Penguin and her glass FLIPPER, K-2nd grade collaged their own penguins with orange triangles for beak and flippers. They decorated the frame with fish since Penguins eat fish.

Masai Tribe: Never lets the tradition die.

3rd-5th graders learned about the Masai tribe while creating these colorful collages.
The Masai people of Kenya and northern Tanzania adorn themselves with "Shukas", the sheets wrapped around their bodies. These are often in bold colors with stripes and plaid. Since we are studying color, we put are “Shukas” in order of the rainbow (ROYGBP).
We used different types of lines to make the stripes and the decorative cloth. We added necklaces and earring on our Masai people, since they are very popular in their culture.
Some of our people might be jumping because Masai warriors are well known for their competitive jumping. Another fun fact about the Masai tribe is that they drink cow blood during celebrations and as nourishment for the sick.

Every student at Fernwood did a self-portrait using the color of their art class group and a color next to it on the color wheel (analogous colors for you advanced artists :-)) Together all our portraits made a rainbow.

ROY G BP!!

6th grade continued their study of Color with collaged color wheels. They could cut any shape out of the painted paper, and they amazed me with the variety of shapes they chose!

All the classes have been using the story of ROY with a G at the BP to remember the order of the colors. It is our version of Roy G. Biv!

Op Art, did we trick your eye?

Optical Art, known as OP art, is art that tricks the eye. Does our artwork look like it is moving? Does it look 3-D? Tricking the eye is not an easy task, so some students just made an awesome looking design using curved lines! That is fine with me, what matters most to me, is that YOU are happy with your completed project. Your artwork demonstrates your style and work ethic in all aspects of life, not just art class. I was sad to see students give up so easily with this project, but happy to see those who did above and beyond what I imagined! Thank you to everyone who tried their best :-)

Fernwood meets Harold

After reading the book "Harold and the Purple Crayon", K and 1st graders put their own purple crayon into action. Some of the students had already met Harold from the HBO family series about Harold and his crayon.
